Children’s Author, John Erickson, to Visit the Customs House Museum

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – This October the Customs House Museum is going to the dogs. John Erickson, author of the popular “Hank the Cowdog” books, will entertain visitors in the Turner Auditorium on October 30th at 10:00am and 2:00pm. During each of the hour-long performances, the author will read excerpts from his books and perform some of the original songs that are woven into his stories.

Each of the 56 books in the series is written from the perspective of Hank the Cowdog, the self-described Head of Ranch Security. Through the eyes of Hank, Erickson provides a unique view of life on a West Texas cattle ranch. Hank, Drover, Pete the Barncat, and other characters are brought to life through Erickson’s unique story-telling ability. Encountering countless adventures, and sometimes misadventures, the characters draw readers into their world and leave them wanting more.

This event is free to the public; however, regular admission will be charged to tour the galleries. Attendees will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. The museum, including the gift shop, will open at 9:30am. A variety of “Hank” books will be available for purchase in Seasons: the Museum Store. Erickson will sign books after each performance. Austin Peay State University’s Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center have partnered to bring this free event to Clarksville.

In conjunction with this special event, the museum’s Explorers’ Gallery is exhibiting through October 31st, pictures of “favorite dogs” created by young visitors. The lobby will feature photos from the Coon Dog Cemetery of Alabama. Created in 1937, the burial spot was a popular hunting camp where coon hunters from miles around gathered to plot their hunting strategies, tell tall tales, chew tobacco and compare coon hounds.
