APSU Department of Communication Hosts Student Debate Forum

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Communication will host its fifth student debate forum from 6:00pm-8:00pm on Thursday, November 4th, in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall.

The event is free and open to the public. The topic for this debate is Resolved: Tennessee should enact legislation requiring immediate deportation of any immigrant unable to produce proof of legal status.

The AP Debate Forum focuses on issues related to students and the community. The Fall 2010 forum will ask students and audience members to consider and discuss positive and negative impacts of immigration law. The debate will be conducted in a two-round series, with four selected students debating the assigned topic. Students and audience members, apart from the selected debaters, will have the opportunity to speak from the floor during the debate.

Participating debaters have been chosen from all on-campus Fundamentals of Public Speaking courses. Participation by all on-campus Public Speaking students is highly encouraged. Public Speaking is a Tennessee Board of Regents core requirement for all students, which will allow this debate to reach students in every major and at every stage in their academic career. The AP Debate Forum is an attempt to engage students outside the classroom, as well as to provide them with a platform to use skills and competencies learned in the public speaking course.

Students and members of the audience will have the opportunity, using iClicker technology, to vote and see real-time results on issues related to the topic. This feedback is designed to demonstrate effectiveness of persuasive argumentation and changes in opinion.
