Hernandez named Athlete of the Week as volleyball heads to OVC tourney

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Ilyana Hernandez, a junior on the Austin Peay State University volleyball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Ilyanna HernandezThe Torrance, CA., native was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, Monday, after recording 28 kills and a .472 attack percentage in the Lady Govs two victories, last week. It was the second time this season she received the honor.

Hernandez went errorless in 27 attempts against Tennessee State, finishing with 15 kills and a .556 attack percentage.

She followed that with 13 kills and a .385 attack percentage against SIU Edwardsville in the regular-season finale.

The Lady Govs enter the OVC Volleyball Tournament as the No. 2 seed, earning a bye to the semifinals. They will face the winner of Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech in a 4:00pm, (CT), Friday match at Morehead State.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Junior Enock Langat, of the men’s cross country team, led the Govs with a 49th-place finish at the NCAA South Regional Championships. It was the second-best finish of any Ohio Valley Conference runner in one of the three regionals.
  • Senior Sarah Alisaleh, of the volleyball team was named the OVC Setter of the Week, Monday. She averaged 14.17 assists in Austin Peay’s two regular-season ending victories, including 43 assists in the three-set victory against Tennessee State and 42 assists in the three-set win against SIU Edwardsville. Alisaleh also led the Lady Govs with five service aces during the week, including four against SIUE.
  • Senior Terrence Holt, of the football team, finished with 130 yards on 16 carries at Eastern Illinois. He scored the Govs only touchdown in the third quarter, capping a 10-play, 56-yard drive, with an 11-yard scamper. Holt was named the College Football Performance Awards Co-Returner of the Week.
  • Juniors Josh Terry and Tyshwan Edmondson, of the men’s basketball team, were named the OVC Newcomers of the Week, Monday. The pair scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, in the Govs 64-61 season-opening win at St. Louis. Edmondson knocked down a pair of free throws with 4.2 seconds left and Terry followed with a game-clinching steal.
