Austin Peay State University GovernorsCharleston, IL – Under Mike Miller, Eastern Illinois has made a steady climb up the Ohio Valley Conference ladder. Last season, the Panthers finished 19-12 overall and 11-7 in the OVC, tying the Govs for third place.

Great expectations exist for an EIU team that returns an impressive corps of players from a year ago, led by the backcourt duo of Tyler Laser (12.9 ppg), a preseason All-OVC selection, and Jeremy Granger (11.3 ppg), one of the league’s top pure point guards.

Like the Governors, the Panthers are off to a 1-0 OVC start, holding off Tennessee State, 68-67, Thursday night. Curry McKinney pulled down a missed TSU free throw with five seconds left to secure a victory in a game that saw 13 ties and 20 lead changes.

The Panthers also had a recent impressive 63-56 road win at Bradley, never wilting against the Missouri Valley power.
Austin Peay, meanwhile, played a near flawless first half against Southeast Missouri, Thursday night, leading 41-26 at intermission, only to fritter away 14 of the 15-point halftime advantage in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

However, the Governors were able to regain control and finished the contest on a 15-3 run for the final 18-point margin in the 78-60 verdict.

Anthony Campbell led the Governors with 19 points while TyShwan Edmondson added 14 along with 13 apiece from Caleb Brown and John Fraley. The Governors shot an impressive 50 percent (26 of 52) from the floor.

APSU, which struggled at the free-throw in recent overtime losses, went an impressive 20 of 25 (80 percent) from the line for the game.
