Govs’ Edmondson earns both OVC Player and Newcomer of Week honors

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – TyShwan Edmondson, who spearheaded Austin Peay State University’s comeback overtime win against Eastern Illinois with a 33-point effort, Saturday night, has been named Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Tyshwan EdmondsonIn addition, Edmondson has earned Newcomer of the Week honors for the second-straight week and third time this season.

That was announced Monday by the Ohio Valley Conference office.

The 6-4 junior guard averaged 23.5 ppg in the two-game road sweep at Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois.

He connected on 8-of-13 three-point shots (61.5 percent) to go with a perfect 11-for-11 effort at the free-throw line.

But it was in Saturday’s comeback win at Eastern Illinois he stood tallest. With the Govs trailing by 13 points and eight minutes left, the Hopkinsville native took game’s control, scoring 13 of the Govs’ last 19 points in regulation, including two three pointers and a traditional three-point play to help force overtime.

In the extra session, he scored the Govs’ final four points, the last two coming at the free-throw line with 2.0 seconds left to seal the win. The free throws came after he grabbed the rebound of Eastern Illinois’ potential game-tying shot. That rebound was Edmondson’s 10th, giving him his first career double-double.

In Thursday’s contest at Southeast Missouri, Edmondson attempted a season-low eight shots but still finished with 14 points in the Govs’ 78-60 victory. With the defense focused on him, he finished with a team-high six assists.
