Govs finally return home seeking revenge against Lipscomb

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Nine games and 25 days into the season, Austin Peay State University’s men’s basketball team finally will play a regular-season home game.

And if there is worry the Govs may have a little road hangover after their opening-Ohio Valley Conference sweep. there shouldn’t be. The Governors will be playing a Lipscomb team, 7:00pm, Tuesday, that defeated the Govs, 104-101 in overtime, November 18th, a game that saw a controversial technical foul call help change the game’s momentum. However, in the end, the Governors were not able to close out the host Bisons because they were unable to make free throws down the stretch during regulation.

The Govs are doing better in that area of late. Against Southeast Missouri, the Governors made 5-of-6 free throws in the final three minutes to pull away from the Redhawks. Then on Saturday against Eastern Illinois, the Governors connected on nine of their last nine down the stretch in regulation to help force overtime and then TyShwan Edmondson made two with two seconds left in overtime to seal the four-point, 77-73 overtime victory.

The Governors, in fact, shot a season-best 80 percent (20 of 25) against Southeast Missouri and were just slightly worse (76.9 percent, 20 of 26) at Eastern Illinois.

The come-from-behind victory against Eastern Illinois was rather remarkable as the Govs’ defensive pressure forced a veteran Panthers teams into five turnovers in the final eight minutes. That was coupled with a inspired Edmondson down-the-stretch performance. He scored 13 of the Govs’ final 19 points in regulation. He then scored the final four in overtime to finish with a career-best 33 points.

Meanwhile, Lipscomb continues to wear well the mantle of being the Atlantic Sun favorite. The Bisons come to Clarksville with a 4-2 overall record, including an A-Sun-opening victory at home Saturday against Mercer. That followed pounding UT Martin, 90-71, in Martin.

Adnan Hodzic, the 6-8 center, continues to lead the Bisons, averaging 21.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg, while guard Josh Slater is at 18 ppg. The Bisons average taking 21 three pointers per contest.
