APSU computer science student wins at regional ACM meeting

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Russell Christensen, computer science major at Austin Peay State University, won first place for his talk “Developing and Releasing an iPhone Application” at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Mid-Southeast Chapter Fall Conference Student Paper Competition held recently in Gatlinburg.

His talk was among 24 presentations by undergraduate students from four-year institutions from a six-state area. His talk provided a demonstration of the APSU iPhone app, discussing the programming language used, problems encountered and solutions and the process of having an app approved by Apple.

Christensen, along with fellow APSU computer science students Robert Dohner and T.J. Phillips, designed APSU’s iPhone app, launched at the beginning of the Fall 2010 semester.

APSU faculty members attending the conference and giving professional talks were Dr. John Nicholson, “ShopTalk: A Mobile Grocery Shopping Application for the Visually Impaired,” and Dr. Jiang Li, “Distributed Remote Sensing Image Information Mining with DryadLINQ.”

Faculty members John Nicholson and Nancy Smithfield also served as session chairs. In addition, they, along with Jim Vandergriff, judged different classifications of papers. Dr. Bruce Myers, professor of computer science and information technology, also attended the conference, now in its 52nd year and one of the oldest computer-related meetings in the U.S.
