December Eagle Remembrance Ceremony

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – A remembrance ceremony honoring Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell, is scheduled for 4:00pm December 8th at the Family Resource Center. Remembrance ceremonies are held to honor fallen Soldiers deployed in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom and are held monthly, as needed. 

The December ceremony will honor the following fallen Fort Campbell Soldiers:

Eric Yates

Eric Yates1st Lt. Eric Yates, 26, of Rineyville, KY died September 18th, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in Maquan, Zhari District, Afghanistan. Yates was an Infantryman assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault.)

He is survived by his father, Mr. David L. Yates and mother Kathy Yates both of Rineyville, KY.

Phillip Tanner

Phillip C. TannerSergeant First Class Phillip C. Tanner, 43, of Sheridan, WY, died October 26th, in a non combat related incident, in Ali Al Salem, Kuwait. Sergeant First Class Phillip C. Tanner, 43, of Sheridan, WY, was a Motor Transportation Operator assigned to 541st Transportation Company, 106th  Transportation Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in Oct 1993 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2007. Tanner was processing through Kuwait after leaving Afghanistan; when he collapsed. 

Tanner is survived by his wife, Hyun J. Tanner of Clarksville, Tennessee and daughter, Ashley M. Tanner in Hinesville, GA.

Kenneth McAninch

Kenneth K. McAninchStaff Sgt. Kenneth Keith McAninch, 28, of Logansport, IN died of a gunshot wound October 21st, while conducting vehicle recovery from a previous improvised explosive device blast in Yahya Khal District, Afghanistan.  McAninch was an Infantryman assigned to Alpha Company, 1st  Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in December 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2009. 

McAninch is survived by his wife, Shawnna R. McAninch; children, Jeremiah McAninch, Braxton  McAninch, Brayden McAninch, Colby Dugan, Shyanne Adam and parents, Marvin McAninch of Logansport, IN and Cheryl Nance of Peru, IN.

Joshua Powell

Joshua David PowellStaff Sgt. Joshua David Powell, 25, of New Berlin, Ill. died September 21st when a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crashed in Qalat, Afghanistan. Powell was a UH-60 Blackhawk Crew Chief assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 6th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade. Powell entered the Army in November 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2005.

Powell is survived by his father, David A. Powell of Springfield, IL and his mother, Susan B. Needham of Pleasant Plains, IL

Jaime Newman

Jamie C. NewmanStaff Sgt. Jaime C. Newman, 27, of Richmond, VA died September 17th, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in Maquan, Zhari District, Afghanistan. Newman was an Infantryman assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault.)

He is survived by his son Damarques J. Newman of Powhatan, VA; daughter Jaidan I. Cox of Richmond, VA; mother, Helen C. Newman of Richmond, VA; and father, Angel Ramos.

Justin Culbreth

Justin CulbrethSergeant Justin Eric Culbreth, 26, of Colorado Springs, CO, was an Infantryman assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in February 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2009.

Culbreth is survived by his wife, Kimberly Culbreth; son, Brandon S. Culbreth; step-daughters, Katelyn R. Carbaugh, Mariah J. Bailey and Hannah G. Carbaugh and step-son, Cole R. Carbaugh, all of Clarksville, Tennessee. He is also survived by his parents Walter and Cheryl Culbreth of Wentzville, MO.

Andrew Hutchins

Andrew HutchinsCorporal Andrew L. Hutchins, 20, of New Portland, Maine, died November 8th, of wounds suffered by small-arms fire while on tower duty in Sabari, Khost Province, Afghanistan. Hutchins was a Military Policeman assigned to Headquarters Company, 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in September 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.

Hutchins is survived by his wife, Heather L. Hutchins of Clarksville, Tennessee; father Jeffrey A. Hutchins of Leeds, Maine and mother, Robin S. Poulin of Waltham, Maine.

Brett Land

Brett W. LandCorporal Brett W. Land, 24, of Wasco, CA died October 30th, after his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in Zhari, Afghanistan. Land, 24, was an Infantryman assigned to Company C., 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in November 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in August 2009. 

Land is survived by his wife, Sarah E. Mejia, and daughter, Riley E. Land of Hesperia, CA; father, Kenneth Land and mother, Gretchen Land, both of Bakersfield, CA.

Matthew Powell

Matthew C. PowellSpecialist Matthew C. Powell, 20, of Slidell, LA, died October 12th at Kandahar Airfield, of wounds suffered in Ghunday Ghar, Afghanistan when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Powell was a Motor Transport Operator assigned to Company A., 526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). 

He joined the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in November 2008. Powell is survived by his father, Lloyd P. Powell of Baton Rouge, LA; and mother, Janice C. Powell of Slidell, LA.

Robert Jenkins

Robert G. JenkinsSpecialist Robert G. Jenkins, 19, of Circleville, Ohio, died October 20th, when struck by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted foot patrol in Maquan, Zahri District, Afghanistan. Jenkins was a Combat Engineer assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2009.    

Jenkins is survived by his father, Roger D. Jenkins and mother Carla K. McNamara both of Circleville, Ohio.

Anthony Vargas

Anthony VargasSpecialist Anthony Vargas, 27, of Reading, PA, died November 8th, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Khogyani District, Nagarhar Province, Afghanistan. Vargas was an Infantryman assigned to Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 61st Calvary Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.

Vargas is survived by his wife, Luisa L. Vargas; son Nathaniel S. Vargas; son Lucas A. Vargas; and daughter Olivia Vargas all of Clarksville, Tennessee; father Julio Vargas and mother, Maria Vargas both of Reading, PA.

David Lutes

Christopher LutesSpecialist David C. Lutes, 28, of Frostburg, MD, died November 11th, in Landsthul, Germany, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Khogyani District, Nagarhar Province, Afghanistan November 8th. Lutes was an Infantryman assigned to Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 61st Calvary Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in January 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2008.

Lutes is survived by his wife, Bobbi J. Lutes; daughters Kya M. and Kaitlyn E. Lutes, all of Oak Grove, KY; and mother, Delia Ahern of Westernport, MD.

Jordan M. Byrd

Jordan M. ByrdPrivate 1st Class Jordan M. Byrd, 19, of Grantsville, Utah died October 13th, when conducting a dismounted operation, the unit came under attack with small arms fire in Yahya Kheyl, Paktia Province, Afghanistan.  Byrd was a Combat Medic assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).  He joined the Army in September 2009 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2010. 

Byrd is survived by his wife, Savanna M. Byrd; son Ayden Byrd both of Clarksville, Tennessee; mother, Roberta Lynn Pitt of Grantsville, Utah; and father Jerald J. Brost, of Casper, WY.
