Late steal leads Lipscomb to road victory at Austin Peay

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Brandon Brown made a steal and then drove the length of the court for a bucket to break a 67-67 tie with 1:00 left to spark Lipscomb to a 73-70 victory against Austin Peay State University, Tuesday night, in non-conference basketball action played at Dave Aaron Arena.

The victory dropped the Governors, members of the Ohio Valley Conference, to 5-5 on the season while Lipscomb, Atlantic Sun members, moved to 5-2 in sweeping the two-game series. It also was the third straight season the Governors dropped their home opener.

Austin Peay held the lead, 67-65, when Anthony Campbell made two free throws with 1:54 and they got the ball back on a Caleb Brown steal. But the Govs could not convert, missing two shot opportunities and then turned the ball over themselves.

Brandon Brown then made a layup from Josh Slater with 1:18 left to tie the game at 67-all before John Fraley attempted to shovel a pass to Anthony Campbell near midcourt. But the pass never reached its destination as Lipscomb’s Brown stepped into the path, stealing it and racing the length of the court to put the visitors up by two.

Caleb BrownOn Austin Peay’s ensuing possession Caleb Brown attempted to tie the contest, but missed the jump shot. The Govs were forced to foul with 27 seconds left, with Slater knocking down both free throws for a four-point advantage. APSU could not come back.

Slater led the Bisons with 23 points while Brandon Barnes added 14. Adnan Hozic contributed 13 points and 17 rebounds as Lipscomb outrebounded the Govs 41-35 on the night.

TyShwan Edmondson led Austin Peay with 21 points, but on 7-of-19 shooting. He also had a team-high eight rebounds.

The Governors forced Lipscomb into 19 turnovers but that was offset by 27 of 66 (40,9 percent) shooting, including 7-of-24 from three-point range. The Governors also shot a woeful 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from the free-throw line.

Lipscomb finished the night 28 of 56 (50 percent) from the floor. It was the third time this season a team shot 50 percent or better against the Governors.
