Clarksville, TN – Melvin Baker, who scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Austin Peay State University’s 86-85 overtime victory against Morehead State, last Tuesday, has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, announced by the league office, Monday.
It is first time the 6-7 junior from Amarillo, Texas has earned the honor and the third Governor to earn such distinction, joining fellow juniors TyShwan Edmondson and Josh Terry.
In helping the Governors to a 4-0 OVC start, Baker connected on 7 of 14 shots against the Eagles and grabbed 10 rebounds for his season’s second double-double. His final rebound and points came on a put-back slam in overtime.
The Odessa College transfer also dished out a season-best five assists to go along with two steals and two dunks in a career-high 44 minutes.
Over his last three games Baker is averaging 16.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Overall he has boosted his scoring and rebounding averages to 9.8 ppg and 4.7 rpg, respectively.
Austin Peay returns to action, 7:00pm, Tuesday, against Brescia.
