Austin Peay State University GovernorsMartin, TN – Josh Terry scored 25 second-half points to lift Austin Peay State University from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat UT Martin, 71-61, in Ohio Valley Conference action, Monday night in Skyhawk Arena.

The victory was Austin Peay’s sixth straight, improving the Governors to 12-6 overall and 6-0 in the OVC. UT Martin falls to 4-13 overall, 0-6 in the OVC.

For much of the first half and in the second half’s early stages it appeared the Governors were going to suffer their first league defeat while the Skyhawks were going to claim that elusive first victory. UT Martin closed the opening half on an 11-2 run to take a 34-25 halftime advantage. The Governors shot just 9 of 24 (37.5 percent) from the field in the opening half.

But in the second half, the 6-5 Terry took over. The transfer forward from Three Rivers Community College, who finished with a career-best 27 points, scored eight of the Governors first 10 points to bring APSU within two points, 37-35. Then Tyrone Caldwell hit a layup to tie the game at 37 as the Governors opened the second half on a 12-3 run.

UT Martin weathered this storm to score the next six points to recapture the momentum. But Terry helped bring back the Governors. He scored six of the Governors next 10 points and added an assist to bring the Govs back to a 49-49 tie with 9:03 remaining.

Josh TerryUTM’s Mike Liabo hit a bucket with 8:39 remaining to the Skyhawks a 51-49 lead. That would be the Skyhawks final lead. Baker hit a layup on pass from Terry to tie the game before Terry gave APSU the lead 51-49 off a pass from Caleb Brown.

The Skyhawks tied the game at 53 before a pair of Terry free throws with 5:58 gave APSU the lead for good.

Brown followed with a layup before the Skyhawks’ Terence Smith cut it back to two, 57-55, with 4:42 left. But from there it was all the Govs and Terry. He scored the Govs’ next seven points, the final three after his led to a layup and UT Martin. He converted the conventional three-point play with 3:19 left to give APSU a 64-57 lead.

Caleb BrownTyShwan Edmondson, who struggled with his shooting for a second straight game, put the game away when he nailed a three pointer from the right of the free-throw circle to give APSU a 10-point lead, 67-57, with 2:39 left.

Edmondson finished with 12 points while John Fraley, who kept the Govs in the game with eight first-half points, ended with 10 points. Terry, meanwhile, connected on 9-of-14 second-half field goals after missing his only attempt in the first 20 minutes.  APSU, in fact, shot 19 of 31 (61.3 percent) in the second half after an abysmal first-half shooting performance to finish at 50.9 percent (28 of 55).

Brown finished with seven assists, his fifth straight contest with seven or more assists for the Govs.

Freshman Troy King led the Skyhawks while another freshman Mike Liabo added 12.
