Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team won all five played singles matches en route to a 6-1 win against Belmont, Saturday, at the Governors Tennis Center.
When Friday’s match with Belmont was canceled due to a sudden winter storm, it had little effect on the Ohio Valley Conference defending champion Lady Govs. The extra day, in fact, only aided in their preperation for in-state rival Lipscomb.
The arrival of Andra Cornea at the spring semester’s start proved to be important to a Lady Govs team that lost four of it’s top six, including two All-OVC selections. Cornea got a warm welcome, Saturday, playing alongside 2010 OVC Player of the Year Vanja Tomic at No. 2 doubles. The pair blanked Lipscomb’s Carlina Jow and Julieanne McMeen, 8-0, while 2010 OVC Freshman of the Year Carolin Weikard teamed with freshman Kimberly Loo for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.Tomic led things off with a win at No. 1 against Elizabeth Keevil and Weikard defeated Kara Jackson in straight sets at No. 2. Both wins continued impressive streaks as it was Tomic 17th-straight dual-format singles, while Weikard is unbeaten in her last 14 dual-format matches.
Each of the Lady Govs three incoming players also picked up wins. Cornea’s win at No. 3 singles was the only truly contested match, but she emerged with a tiebreak win against Alyssa Bellini. Loo and freshman Rachel Margolies both won in straight sets.
