“Georgia State is a really good team and coach (Chase) Hodges has done an excellent job there,” Govs head coach Malik Tabet said. “Their players really grind out points and play good tennis. We’ve been doing a great job in doubles; I really like our doubles combinations and they’re playing well.”

The Govs (1-1) swept the doubles point, continuing the strong doubles play Tabet expected from his young team. It was in singles where the Panthers (2-2) were able to make up ground, taking five of six matches to overcome the doubles loss.

Sophomore doubles tandem Henrique Norbiato and Sean Bailey played the closest doubles match at No. 1. The Govs trailed the match at 6-4, but rallied to force the tiebreaker. It was in the tiebreak, Norbiato and Bailey jumped to a 4-3 lead and held on to win 7-3.

Henrique Norbiato At No. 2 doubles, freshman Jasmin Ademovic and Remi Calleja rolled to an 8-4 win, while sophomore John Storie and freshman Joao Pagan won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Norbiato earned the Govs only win at No. 2, downing Georgia State’s Breon Badger in straight sets. Pagan battled at No. 6, but lost in tiebreaker to Lucas Santana.

“We lost too many sets at 6-4 and that tells me that we competed well, but we’re not playing the important points right,” Tabet said. “It was a good match and good competition, but we have to play those points better. That’s an adjustment we have to make in the future.”
