Proposed Amendment to City’s Private Act Charter

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan intends to request the City Council to approve a resolution that will ask the Montgomery County Legislative Delegation to introduce legislation to amend the city’s Private Act Charter to incorporate Section 1-208 of the city code restricting the employment by the city of a former mayor or city council member until a designated time period has elapsed.

McMillan said the action is following through with a pledge she made prior to being sworn into office to fix the apparent loophole that allows Power Board members to place an elected official fresh out of office in the CDE superintendent position.

A recently released Attorney General’s opinion, which McMillan requested on January 3rd and was returned February 9th, contained language that indicates such an amendment to the charter would be proper and legal.

“We must hold our elected officials, both present and former, to the highest ethical standards,” McMillan said. “This charter change follows that principal, and I ask the Council to help me move Clarksville in this positive direction.”
