Clarksville, TN – John Fraley scored a career-high 21 points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked four shots to lead Austin Peay State University to a 79-64 victory, Saturday night, in Ohio Valley Conference action in Dave Aaron Arena.
The victory snapped the Governors two-game losing streak and improved them to 16-11 overall and 10-5 in the OVC. Tennessee State, meanwhile, lost its second-straight game and fifth in the last six games to fall to 11-14 overall and 8-7 in the OVC.
Fraley almost was equally effective in both halves against the Tigers, scoring nine points in the opening half and 12 more in the second as he went 9-of-12 from the floor on the night. His previous scoring best came against Niagara early in the 2009-10 season.Fraley was particularly effective when Tennessee State attempted to go with a smaller lineup and exert fullcourt and halfcourt pressure. At one in the second half, the 6-8 homegrown product scored seven of Austin Peay’s nine points as the Governors were able to maintain a double-digit lead at 61-47 with 9:04 remaining.
Tennessee State would get no closer than 11 points the game’s remainder and when they did at 73-62 with 2:03 remaining, Fraley answered with two more layups to seal the contest.
Fraley was one of four Governors in double figures as point guard Caleb Brown tossed in 14 points to go with five assists and five steals. Guard TyShwan Edmondson, the OVC scoring leader, snapped a two-game single-digit scoring drought by tallying 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman forward Will Triggs added 11 points, his fourth straight double-digit effort.
Tennessee State opened the night’s scoring on a Robert Covington layup. It would prove to the Tigers’ only lead as the Govs’ Caleb Brown answered with a three pointer before a Fraley dunk made it a 6-2 game. A Verkeneo Mann tied the game at 5-5 before a Fraley layup with 17:38 left in the first half gave Austin Peay the lead for good. The Govs would lead by as much as 11 first-half point before settling for a 39-29 halftime lead.
Patrick Miller led Tennessee State with 15 point while Robert Covington had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Austin Peay, which was out-rebounded 52-35 in the first meeting with the Tigers, held a 35-32 advantage, Saturday night. The Governors also shot an impressive 55.8 percent (29 of 52) from the floor while holding TSU to 35.1 percent (20 of 57) shooting.
The Governors next game is Tuesday, February 15th againest Jacksonville State at 7:00pm.
