Streaking Lady Govs top Tennessee Tech

APSU Women’s Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCookeville, TN – Make it five-straight wins for Austin Peay women’s basketball team. The Lady Govs controlled the second half and worked their way to a 63-57 Ohio Valley Conference win at Tennessee Tech.

While APSU’s leading scorer Whitney Hanley scored only five points, they couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. With the Lady Govs trailing 55-54 and 1:46 left, Hanley knocked down a three to put her team ahead by one point. Then with four seconds left, Hanley buried a pair of free throws to set the game’s final margin.

“We put four players in double figures and then there’s Whitney Hanley,” head coach Carrie Daniels said. “She had one field goal, and then a pair of free throws, all with less than two minutes to go. I think it speaks volumes about how far our team has come and where we’re at now.”

The win not only improved the Lady Govs season-best win streak, but also put them in prime position to fight for a top-four seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament. Tennessee Tech is left need a win in its regular-season finale against Jacksonville State to claim an outright OVC regular-season title.

Brooke FaulknerIn a game that saw 21 lead changes, there was no denying the determination of either team. Austin Peay led by two points, 32-30, at the break after a free-throw line jumper by Kaitlyn Hill with 33 seconds left. The Lady Govs made a defensive stand as Tacarra Hayes held for the last shot on the next possession. That type of pressure fueled Austin Peay in the second half.

The two teams traded baskets for the first nine minutes of the second half until a Meghan Bussabarger three pointer, her only three, made it 45-40 at the 11:05 mark.

Bussabarger, Jasmine Rayner, Brooke Faulkner, Nicole Olszewski; as the Tennessee Tech crowd attempted to take Austin Peay out of the game, a variety of Lady Govs players stepped up to make big shots.

Jasmine Rayner“We fought hard tonight,” Daniels said. “Anyone that was in this gym or saw this game tonight saw a tremendous basketball game. I’m so excited that our team was able to pull together and get this win. It was a back-and-forth battle for 40 minutes.”

Faulkner paced four Lady Govs in double figures with 14 points, scoring 12 in the first half to keep Austin Peay alive while Hanley was sidelined in foul trouble. In fact, at the break, Faulkner was the only player for either side in double digits.

Olszewski played a terrific 38 minutes, scoring 12 points while turning the ball over only one time. Rayner and Bussabarger each scored 11 points as well.

Nicole OlszewskiWhile the race for Music City Madness is heating up, it’s not over yet. Austin Peay plays host to Eastern Illinois – a team tied with the Lady Govs in the standings – in a 5:15pm, Thursday contest at the Dunn Center.

“This gives us a lot of momentum,” Daniels said. “To take a five-game win streak into the final home stand is important. But the next game coming up is the most important one. This is where we want to be playing our best. There are still some things we need to work on, but I like where we are and I like what we’re doing.”
