Brentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University freshman second baseman Jordan Hankins and junior pitcher Zach Toney were named the Ohio Valley Conference’s player and pitcher of the week, respectively, the league office announced, Monday.
Jordan Hankins
Hankins, of Wentzville, MO, was 8-of-13 (.615) with five RBI in the Govs opening weekend against Valparaiso. He began his collegiate career with a 4-for-5, two-RBI performance, Friday. He followed that with a 3-for-5, RBI effort in the Govs extra-inning victory, Saturday, with a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly. Hankins finished the weekend with a 1-for-3, two-RBI effort in which he reached base three times.
Zach Toney
Toney, of D’Iberville, MS, closed the Govs weekend in fine fashion, retiring all 12 batters he faced in four relief innings to pick up the save, Sunday. He began his outing with four consecutive strikeouts and finished the game with seven strikeouts.
Austin Peay’s baseball team opened its 2011 season with a three-game series sweep of Valparaiso. The Govs return to action when they host Illinois State and Milwaukee in the Riverview Inn Invitational, Friday-Sunday. Austin Peay opens tournament play with a 3:00pm, Friday contest against Illinois State.
