Lady Govs look to end losing streak at Buzz Classic

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team looks to end its recent losing streak this weekend as it participates in the 21-team Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock, GA.

The Lady Govs (2-11) enter this weekend’s games having lost their last six contests, including all five games at the University of Mississippi Red and Blue Classic last weekend.

Austin Peay, which finished third in the 2009 Buzz Classic behind Purdue and host Georgia Tech, opens play  Friday with games against Mercer, at 10:00am, and Alabama State, at noon.

On Saturday, the Lady Govs play two afternoon games, the first against Drexel, at 3:00pm, followed by Rhode Island, at 5:00pm.

Austin Peay concludes play in the classic, 8:00am, Sunday, against Boston University.

Entering the weekend, the Lady Govs are led offensively by senior Tiffany Smith and junior Catie Cozart, who enter the weekend hitting at a .270 clip, respectively, with Cozart coming off a .357 effort at the plate during last weekend’s classic at Ole Miss.

Tiffany SmithAlso, Smith leads the Lady Govs in runs scored (8) and RBI (6).

Austin Peay hopes to see its pitching staff evolve this weekend after an inconsistent performance in Mississippi, which saw the staff finish with an ERA of more than 5.50.

This weekend’s Buzz Classic will be the last games for the Lady Govs before opening Ohio Valley Conference play, March 12th-13th, at Morehead State.
