Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team dropped a closely contested, 4-3, match at Southern Illinois, Saturday.
It was the Lady Govs third-straight non-conference road loss after falling at Xavier and Miami (Ohio). It also was the second-straight non-conference loss for junior Vanja Tomic.
The Salukis won the doubles point with a win at No. 2, where Tomic and freshman Andra Cornea lost 8-6. The Lady Govs having only five players meant defaulting the No.3 doubles match and leaving No. 1 doubles with an unfinished match despite sophomore Carolin Weikard and freshman Kimberly Loo leading 6-5.Tomic and Weikard lost the top two singles matches, but the Lady Govs freshman came through with three wins. Cornea overcame an opening set loss to win a three-set match at No. 4 Freshman Rachel Margolies, meanwhile, split the first two sets at No. 5, but won the tiebreaker to take the match.
