“We didn’t shake the rust off like we needed to today,” Govs head coach Kirk Kayden said. “We battled some strong winds, but there were some good scores put up. We have to come and play better tomorrow.”

Senior Luke Sherrod leads the Govs with a five-over par 77. Sherrod made three straight birdies to finish the front nine even, but ran into trouble after making the turn. He double-bogeyed Nos. 10 and 12, and made only one birdie over the last six holes.

Luke SherrodFreshman Marco Iten is one shot behind Sherrod after an opening-round 78. Unlike Sherrod, Iten’s trouble came on the front nine. Iten had a pair of double-bogeys early, but settled in to shoot just two over on the back nine.

Austin Peay’s other two counting scores were a pair of 80s from sophomore Dustin Korte and freshman Trey Tarpley. Korte was one-over after nine holes, but made two doubles and a bogey to start the back nine. Tarpley, meanwhile, finished his round with three doubles and three bogeys, offset by a lone birdie on No. 17.

The USF Invitational continues, Saturday, when the Govs tee off at 12:45pm, in a pairing with Florida Atlantic and Rhode Island.
