Lady Govs golf heads to Florida for second spring tourney

APSU Women’s Golf

Austin Peay State UniversityCitrus Springs, FL – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team is counting on much better weather for its season’s second spring tournament when it participates in the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate, Thursday-Saturday, at the El Diablo Golf and Country Club.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played on a par-72, 5,902-yard layout.  The weather promises to be better than the season-opening NewWave Communications Classic, that saw the opening round washed out and the course play extremely long the next day with the aftereffects from the heavy rains.

“The girls are excited about being in some warm weather and practicing hard,” APSU coach Sara Robson said.” We have enjoyed our time in Florida and are looking to play well this week.”

A pair of seniors, Chelsea Harris and Ashley Wathen, are expected to lead the Lady Govs. Harris is the defending Ohio Valley Conference medalist and overcame a terrible start in Murray to finish at 82. Wathen fired an 81 as did junior Ashley Averitt, who also will help comprise the team.

Holly BateyThe other two team members will be sophomore Holly Batey and redshirt freshman Tabitha Beard, who shot 80 and 81, respectively, as individuals at Murray State. Batey’s 80 represented a career best.

In addition to Austin Peay and host Eastern Kentucky, Barry University, Mount St. Mary’s, St. John’s and Western Kentucky will comprise the six-team tournament.
