Lady Govs golf in second place after Day One of El Diablo

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCitrus Springs, FL – Chelsea Harris shot a two-over 74, Thursday, to help propel Austin Peay State University women’s golf team to second place after Day One of the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate, being played at the at the El Diablo Golf and Country Club.

Despite an early morning rain delay, the Lady Govs shot a 313 on the par-72, 5,902-yard layout, leaving them just three strokes behind host and Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky. Florida Atlantic is in third (315) while Barry (320) is fourth in the seven-team tournament.

Harris, the defending OVC tournament medalist and league Player of the Year, was one shot behind St. John’s Harin Lee and Western Kentucky’s Kristen Wilkinson for low round of the day. Harris, in fact, was one of just two players on the day to record an eagle and tied for the lead in pars (12) recorded. She also was minus-one on Par 3s.

“Chelsea had an eagle and a birdie today,” APSU coach Sara Robson. “It was good to see her play like Chelsea again. She really played well.”

Chelsea HarrisTwo other Lady Govs shot under 80, sophomore Holly Batey and junior Ashley Averitt, who are tied for eighth after firing 79s. Senior Ashley Wathen is tied for 17th after shooting an 81 while Tabitha Beard overcame a slow start to fire an 83 (t/24th).

“Holly really played well again,” Robson said. “Averitt and Wathen didn’t hit the ball well but scored well for us today. That was good to see. And Tabitha really came back after a bad start to play well for us.”

Individually, senior Catie Tucker overcame a triple- and double-bogey on the first two holes to finish with an 84 (t/28th). Freshmen Rachel Deaton (88/40th) and Tala Mumford (91/t44th) rounded out the Lady Govs scores.

“Catie really played well after just a terrible start,” Robson said. “She really held it together and bounced back really well.”
