Lady Govs golf struggles through second round in Florida

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCitrus Springs, FL – The second-round of the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate proved to be a frustrating one for the Austin Peay State University women’s golf team.

A day after shooting a 313, the Lady Govs ballooned to a 331, Friday, for a 644 total and fell from second place to fifth in the seven-team tournament at the El Diablo Golf and Country Club. Eastern Kentucky remains comfortably in first place at 621, followed by Florida Atlantic (629), St. John’s (637) and Western Kentucky (640).

The tourney’s final round will be played Saturday on the par-72, 5,902-yard layout.

No Lady Gov was able to break 80, Friday. Sophomore Holly Batey led the way with an 81 followed by Chelsea Harris with an 82. Harris stands at 156, slipping from third to a tie for seventh place while Batey is tied for 109th at 160.

Redshirt freshman Tabitha Beard was the only Lady Gov team member, Friday, who did not see her score increase by matching Thursday’s 83 with another 83. Junior Ashley Averitt fired an 85 while senior Ashley Wathen recorded an 87.

All three individual Lady Govs all improved on their Thursday scores. Catie Tucker followed her 84 with an 82; Rachel Deaton went from 88 to 82 while fellow freshman Tala Mumford bounced back from a 91 to shoot 86, Friday.

Holly Batey“Holly played well again today, but just had a tough time with lag putts,” Robson said. “Tabitha is sore (wrist) but was able to finish strong for us. Catie and Rachel also played well.”

Robson is hopeful the Lady Govs can revert to Thursday’s form on Saturday.

“We will need to go out tomorrow with more confidence, positive attitudes and the determination to trust our talents and abilities,” Robson said.
