Lady Govs lose one-run affair on pinch home run

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMorehead, KY – Austin Peay’s softball team took a lead early against Morehead State, in the finale of the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, but a late pinch home run by the Eagles proved to be the different in a 3-2 Lady Gov loss.

Seldom used Corie Roberts came off the bench in the bottom of the sixth inning – with the score tied 2-2 – and hit a 3-2 pitch off of Lady Govs (3-16, 0-3 OVC) starter Lauren de Castro out over the left-center field fence to give Morehead State a 3-2 lead.

Ashley Imperial (5-5) would pick up her second win of the weekend for the Eagles, while de Castro (0-3) took the loss.

Austin Peay jumped out in front in the top of the second inning on red-shirt sophomore Shelby Norton’s team-leading fourth home run of the season.

Shelby NortonIt was Norton’s second home run of the weekend and the fifth overall by the Lady Govs in the series.

The Lady Govs would double their lead in the third, making it 2-0, when junior Catie Cozart – who had singled to open the inning – stole home on the back side of a double steal, with de Castro stealing second on the play.

Morehead State (9-11, 3-0 OVC) would answer back in the bottom of the third inning by scoring its first run of the game on a bases-loaded single by Rebecca Butler, scoring Sam Woodall.

Lauren de CastroAustin Peay had chances to add to its lead, but the Lady Govs left seven runs on base, including leaving runners in scoring position in the second through fifth innings.

The Eagles would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning 2-2 by taking advantage of a hit batter and two walks by de Castro – including forcing a run in on a base-loaded walk to Stephanie Etter scoring Amber Riddle.

Red-shirt sophomore Jessica Ryan would lead the Lady Govs with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, while junior Amy Mills recorded a double and sophomore Morgan Brewer had a single to round out Austin Peay’s hits.
