College Republicans launch political challenge toward 2012 by electing proactive President

The College RepublicansClarksville, TN – Whoever coined the phrase the youth are our future had to be talking about Austin Peay State University College Republican President Michael Jenkins.

I have gotten to know Michael long before his election as president at of all places his visits to Coffee Party meetings. I like Michael a lot because he has a good heart and is not afraid to talk with people who have other beliefs or ideals.

Now before you die hard conservatives start to paint him a flip flopper I like to say that not only is he a loyal and dedicate republican but he has often defended has party and their platform when challenged at community and political venues in and around Clarksville.

If I had to describe him I would have to say that he is a product of the future.  His main motive of operation is to seek information and engage in civil dialog before going on the attack while most young people will tend to follow whatever the popular media tells them. This is what young politicians will be become no matter if they are Democrat or Republican. Michael comes from a family where both parents are blue blood democrats yet he chose to forge his own path, and become a Republican.

So that there is no confusion, I as the author of this piece has been a Democrat with a liberal bent for a long time, I have Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Progressives and even some of the original Tea Partiers as friends.  My point being that you don’t choose or abandon your friends because of their political views. We will clear up that subject up in a later article in the future.

Anyways Michael and I sat down and talked for several hours then afterwards I presented him with a few short questions about who he is and what his political goals and agenda are for himself and the APSU College Republicans.

Terry McMoore: Tell me something about yourself?

Michael Jenkins: My name is Michael Jenkins, I am a military brat, my family is originally from New England and we ended up in Clarksville in 2005 via the military, I graduated from Clarksville High School. I go to Austin Peay State University where I am majoring in Political Science with a minor in American history.

Terry McMoore: So you major in political science, what got you interested in politics?

Michael Jenkins: I have always been interested in politics since the tenth grade while in high school, when I joined the Model United Nations group where as delegates we are tasked with helping to solve world issues. Also The Youth Legislature group which is hosted every year at the state capital in Nashville where we emulated the day to day operations of our state legislators in action. From there I did Mock Congress and always wanted to help my community in some way and I did so by helping out in the local Clarksville mayoral election last year.

Terry McMoore: So you said you like to help out your community, what do you like to do?

Michael Jenkins: Again I worked on the local mayoral election last year, sadly the candidate I supported didn’t win but I gained valuable experience and learned a lot from it. I was also involved in the local Republican Party and the Austin Peay State University College Republican chapter where I have engaged in dialog and activist with organizations such as the Coffee Party and the Common Sense coalition which are both national organizations.

Terry McMoore: Why did you get involved into the College Republicans?

Michael Jenkins: I got involved with the College Republicans when I began my freshman year at Austin Peay State University back in 2009. As I am a Republicans and a big supporter of the military not only because of my dad’s loyal serve to our country but because of the many soldiers who have helped to persevere your freedom and well as mine. Living and always belonging to a military family has educated and reminded me of my responsibility in helping and staying get involved in helping my community.

Terry McMoore: What have you done with the APSU College Republicans?

Michael Jenkins: During my work with the party since the fall of 2009 I have served as Historian for the College Republicans and help create their website which is apsugop.webs.com. I have also worked on the APSU College Republican Facebook Page. I was also the Vice President of the College Republicans and now I am the current President of the APSU College Republicans.

Terry McMoore: So since you mention that you are the President of the College Republicans, what do you got in store with the organization?

Michael Jenkins: Well 2012 is right around the corner so we are preparing for the upcoming election. We are planning to raise money by fund raisers and events and recruit new people to the organization.

Terry McMoore: Recruitment, ok what kind of people do you want to recruit?

Michael Jenkins: I want to recruit young new members who are eager to help out the Community and the Republican Party for not only for the 2012 election but every year.

Terry McMoore: Ok now you also mention in fund raisers, do you have any ideas?

Michael Jenkins: I have several ideas that I will work with the local Republican Chapters APSU and other State Republican Chapters. There are some ideas like a barbecue dinner fund raisers and silent auction ideals that are currently in the works.

Terry McMoore: Ok you mention the website is there any other way to contact you?

Michael Jenkins: Yes again we have the website at apsugop.webs.com where you can see the updates from the College Party Chapter. You can also contact me by email at mikejenkins76@yahoo.com. If you want to contact me personally and want to speak to me immediately you can by 931-249-3719.

Terry McMoore: Last question, now you are a Republican and you mention that you are preparing for 2012, have you got a candidate for President in mind?

Michael Jenkins: You know what, I have a few people who I would like to support in 2012 but I won’t mention them at this time. The upcoming election is open to any candidate who comes to the Austin Peay College Republicans meeting to discuss why they should be President of the United States and whoever wins the National party nomination as APSU College Republican President they will have my full support.

In closing it has been delightful doing this interview with Michael Jenkins but most of all I have been reminded that we don’t all have to agree on the same issues but being able to sit down and have a civil conversation goes a very long way in solving some of the problems that affect our nation!
