First Time Military Homebuyer Seminar

Know Before You File: Special Treatment for Military First-Time Home-buyers

H&R BlockClarksville, TN – H&R Block has teamed up with local real estate company; Reliant Realty, to offer a free Informational Seminar for First Time Military Home-buyers.

Topics to be covered will be First-time Home-buyer Tax Extension, Why the Home-buyer Credit Exception is important, and an overview of the home buying process for Veterans and information on VA Home Loans.

The event will be held at the H&R Block’s Park Place location between Gates #2 and #3; at 3095 B. Fort Campbell Blvd. on Saturday March 19th and will run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

As the IRS continues to accept e-filed returns, H&R Block is taking the guesswork out of tax season for our military taxpayers with two significant tips to help them navigate tax season 2011:

  • 2011 Federal filing deadline is April 18th – Due to the observation of Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia on April 15th, the filing deadline for federal tax returns is April 18 this year. But, some state filing deadlines will remain April 15th.
  • Homebuyer credit exceptions for military – According to the IRS, “an eligible taxpayer must buy, or enter into a binding contract to buy, a principal residence on or before April 30th, 2011. If a binding contract is entered into by that date, the taxpayer has until June 30th, 2011, to close on the purchase. Members of the uniformed services, members of the Foreign Service and employees of the intelligence community are eligible for this special rule. It applies to any individual (and, if married, the individual’s spouse) who serves on qualified official extended duty service outside of the United States for at least 90 days during the period beginning after December 31st, 2008, and ending before May 1st, 2010.”

Additionally military personnel who claimed the 2008 homebuyer credit and sold the house after December 31st, 2008 due to relocation orders do not have to pay back the credit.
