Lady Govs drop OVC home opener to EKU

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay’s softball team dropped an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader to Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Lady Govs Field by scores of 5-3 and 11-2, in five innings.

In game 1, Austin Peay (4-18, 0-5 OVC) and Eastern Kentucky were scoreless after the first two innings of play, but the Colonels (15-9, 2-3 OVC) scored four times in the top of the third inning, as its first five batters reached base to open the inning.

The Lady Govs responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, with senior Randal Davenport and junior Amy Mills drawing walks – while freshman Lauren de Castro singling in between the two walks to load the bases.

An out later, junior Catie Cozart drove in Davenport and de Castro with a single to right field cutting Eastern Kentucky’s lead in half, 4-2.

But that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get, with Eastern Kentucky adding a run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 5-2.

Shelby NortonAustin Peay would tack on its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning, on an RBI single by de Castro, scoring sophomore Morgan Brewer for the 5-3 final.

Red-shirt sophomore Shelby Norton would have the only other Lady Gov hit in the opener.

In Game 2, Eastern Kentucky broke open a 1-0 game with back-to-back five-run innings in the third and fourth innings to go up 11-0, while Austin Peay would score its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run single by Davenport scoring senior Tiffany Smith – who singled to open the inning – and junior Ashley Bolda, who reached when she was hit by a pitch.

Catie CozartAlong with Smith and Davenport, de Casto would have a hit in Game 2 for Austin Peay, while Cozart led the Lady Govs with two hits – including a triple.

The two teams conclude the three-game series Sunday with a single game starting at 1:00pm.
