Lady Govs rally to take extra-inning OVC win from Skyhawks

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMartin, TN – Rallying from five runs down in its opening game, Austin Peay’s softball team picked up its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season Tuesday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field with a 7-6, nine-inning, victory over conference co-leader Tennessee-Martin, before falling in the nightcap, 6-0.

Austin Peay (5-20, 1-6 OVC) had nursed a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but saw the Skyhawks score six times in the frame to take the lead, while also looking to hand the Lady Govs another heartbreaking, late inning, loss.

But after red-shirt sophomore Jessica Ryan was thrown out trying to stretch a inning-opening single into a double, sophomore Morgan Brewer followed with a single and moved to second on a throwing error by the Tennessee-Martin (18-10, 7-1 OVC) right fielder.

Freshman Taylor Mills would come in to run for Brewer and move to third base on an infield single by senior Randal Davenport.

After the Skyhawks got the second out, freshman Kayla Davidson walked to load the bases, which was then followed by fellow freshman Lauren de Castro being hit by a pitch, bringing in Mills to make it 6-2.

Catie CozartJunior Catie Cozart then greeted new UTM pitcher Chelsea Jones with a single up the middle and brought in Davidson and Davenport to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Junior Amy Mills capped off the inning with a single to right center scoring de Castro and Cozart all the way around from first to tie the game, 6-6.

It would remain that way until the ninth inning, with Davidson opening things up for Austin Peay with her second hit of the game and moved into scoring position, with two outs, on an ground out.

Amy MillsThat would bring up Mills, who fisted a flair over the first baseman’s that fell in just inside the right field foul line, scoring Davidson, and giving the Lady Govs a 7-6 lead.

Brewer, who came in and pitched the final three and two-third innings, sat the Skyhawks down in order in the bottom of the inning, to pick up the win, and seal the come-from-behind victory for the Lady Govs.

Austin Peay had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, when Bolda got on with a one-out infield single, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Davidson, and scored on a single up the middle by de Castro.

Lauren de CastroOverall, the Lady Govs outhit the Skyhawks 12-8 in the game, with Mills, Brewer and Davenport all recording two hits each.

Mills would also finish with three RBI, while de Castro and Cozart drove in two each.

Austin Peay wasn’t able to carry the momentum into the second game, as the Lady Govs were held to just two hits in Game 2 – a third-inning single by Taylor Mills and a sixth inning single by Amy Mills – while Tennessee-Martin recorded 12 hits, while scoring six runs to salvage a split in the doubleheader.
