APSU BFA Student’s Senior Show Exhibits Hidden Beauty of Old Abandoned Home

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Old, abandoned houses are normally considered to be eyesores to a neighborhood. Many are torn down to be replaced by something new, but away from the city and suburban life many are left standing to crumble and decay on their own. They become overgrown and hidden by brush and weeds, only to become forgotten and passed over.

Austin Peay State University photography student Megan Melton, however, seeks to find these places and show the beauty of what they once were and are now.

“I hope to inspire people to open their eyes a little more to their surroundings,” Melton said, “getting them to notice the proof of life and beauty everywhere around them.”

In her senior exhibit, “Elegant Decay,” Melton profiles a single abandoned home in Nolensville, Tennessee, that has captured her attention. She displays a variety of photography processes, from digital to the classic cyanotype, to portray different aspects of the house and let them shine. The show opens April 4th with a reception at 7:00pm in the Trahern Student Gallery and it will run for one week, until April 8th.
