Austin Peay is looking to build on its success at last weekend’s Austin Peay Spring Fling. Unlike the small, low-key Spring Fling, the Alabama Relays will provide a championship-type structure and a crowd to match. The Lady Govs will have to show poise in order to move forward.

Freshman Alyxandra Pinkston was impressive at the Spring Fling, shaving more than a second off her times in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Fellow freshman Taelor Slaughter succeeded in her first real attempt in distance running, posting a 2:26.54 time in the 800-meter run. Senior Janelle Avery, meanwhile, set the Ohio Valley Conference’s second-best time (2:24.52) in the 800-meter run.

One area the Lady Govs will continue to emphasize is the long and triple jumps. Sophomores Leigha Tolliver and Cenitra Hudson have anchored the jump crew thus far. After struggling during much of the indoor season and fouling out at Coastal Carolina, they each posted solid jumps at the Spring Fling, Hudson at 11.61m and Tolliver at 11.58m.

Other events of note for the Lady Govs will be the 200- and 400-meter dashes for senior Chiamaka Obi. Needing to cut almost a full second for a regional qualifying time in the 400-meter dash, Obi last ran the 400-meter hurdles at the Spring Fling. Freshman Zakiya Alcantara will likely make her second appearance in the pole vault as well.
