Homemade Chocolate Pudding

Homemade Chocolate PuddingThere are just some foods that are perfect for a chilly spring evening. This is one of them, and its very easy to prepare. I had forgotten just HOW delicious this stuff is. A friend asked for a different recipe and while I was looking for it,  I found this;  My Mother’s Homemade Chocolate Pudding recipe.

Some people are surprised at the use of flour in a pudding recipe instead of cornstarch. Flour gives the pudding a nice weighty, thick feel on your palate. Along with the cocoa, it creates a delicious treat that must be what snack heaven is like.

Some people think its a lot like chocolate gravy…. but its a bit thicker…

Here is what you need:

  • 1/4 c flour
  • 6 Tablespoons sugar
  • 2/3 c powdered milk
  • dash of salt
  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Here are the cooking instructions.

  1. Place all dry ingredients in a heavy saucepan.
  2. Gradually add 2 cups water and 2 Tablespoons butter, blending thoroughly all the while.
  3. Set over a low flame and stir until the pudding thickens and starts to bubble when you stop stirring for a moment.
  4. Turn off heat.
  5. Cool slightly
  6. blend in vanilla if using.

The above recipe makes about 4 servings.

To make it even richer tasting, stir in 1 teaspoon of good vanilla right before dishing it up. I use a immersion blender on low to blend the ingredients while adding the liquid.
