APSU Women’s Softball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCape Girardeau, MO – Austin Peay’s softball team got a huge pitching performance from junior Ashley Bolda and led wire-to-wire Sunday afternoon, in the finale of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Southeast Missouri, including holding off a last-inning rally by the Redhawks, to take a 2-1 victory.

Austin Peay (8-25, 3-10 OVC) led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Southeast Missouri took advantage of two hits and an error to score its only run of the game, while also putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position at second and third base.

But Bolda (2-5) got the next two Redhawk hitters to groundout, including a great diving stop by red-shirt sophomore Shelby Norton at first base to end the game.

Bolda, in her complete-game victory, limited the Redhawks (12-20, 8-6 OVC) to five hits and no walks, while striking out three.

The Lady Govs also flashed some leather on defense too in the win, with red-shirt sophomore Jessica Ryan making a diving catch in leftfield in the second inning and freshman Lauren de Castro doing the same in right field an inning later.

Catie CozartAustin Peay’s defense also would turn a big double play in the sixth inning, with junior centerfielder Catie Cozart making a running catch in right-center and getting back to the infield for an appeal at second base with the runner there leaving early, which was confirmed for the third out to end the scoring threat.

Offensively, the Lady Govs got on the scoreboard quickly, with de Castro leading off the game with her third home run of the season over the left field fence to give Austin Peay a 1-0 lead.

Lauren de CastroThe Lady Govs would add to their lead in the top of the third inning on a double off the centerfield fence by Norton, to make it 2-0, scoring senior Randal Davenport – who had opened the inning by beating out an infield hit with a head-first slide at first.

Bolda, Cozart and junior Amy Mills also had hits for the Lady Govs in the victory.
