Govs midweek fare includes Evansville, Middle Tennessee

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay will play a pair of non-conference contests during the upcoming week, hosting Evansville in a 6:00pm, Tuesday contest at Raymond C. Hand Park before traveling to Middle Tennessee for a 6:00pm, Wednesday contest at Reese Smith Jr. Field in Murfreesboro TN.

Austin Peay (12-13, 3-2 OVC) saw its bats come alive as it won its Ohio Valley Conference series against Eastern Illinois, 2-1. The Govs batted .402 over the weekend – with 15 extra-base hits (.608 slugging percentage) and averaged 8.3 runs per game. That outburst helped cover a sub-par defensive effort as the Govs committed seven miscues – their worst weekend outing this season. Austin Peay’s pitching staff stayed on course with a 5.40 ERA on the weekend, but seeing senior starter Jack Snodgrass and junior reliever Chuck Edlin each record their season’s first victory.

Tyler ChildressJunior outfielder Tyler Childress made the biggest gain over the weekend, bringing his average up 66 points to a season-best .287 after recording seven hits and six RBI over the weekend. Junior first baseman John Hogan raised his average 40 points (.287) with a seven-hit weekend and junior third baseman Greg Bachman added 35 points to his average (.247) with a five-hit weekend.

On the mound the Govs will turn to a pair of junior right-handers for the two midweek starts. Eric Davis (0-1) will make his season’s second start, Tuesday against Evansville, but will appear on the mound for the first time since March 9th – a start against South Dakota State. Andy Cox (0-1) will make his season first start  at Middle Tennessee, Wednesday, last appearing in relief March 22nd at Western Kentucky.

Eric DavisEvansville (15-9) visits Raymond C. Hand Park after sweeping a three-game series from IP-Fort Wayne over the weekend. The Purple Aces are 3-1 against OVC members already this season, winning both ends of a home-and-home series against UT Martin and splitting a doubleheader against Eastern Illinois. Senior third baseman Cody Fick leads UE with 39 RBI in 24 games this season while batting .400 with 12 doubles and three home runs.

Middle Tennessee (8-18) followed its victory at Austin Peay, last Wednesday, by winning a three-game Sun Belt Conference series, 2-1, against South Alabama over the weekend. The Blue Raiders are 2-2 against OVC opposition this season, losing a pair of games to Jacksonville State while defeating Tennessee Tech in addition to APSU. Senior outfielder Will Skinner enters the week leading MTSU in batting average (.349), home runs (six) and RBI (21) and led the Blue Raiders to their game-three victory against South Alabama with a walk-off two-run home run.

Notes From The Weekend

John HoganAustin Peay won its Ohio Valley Conference series against Eastern Illinois, 2-1, dropping the series opener before winning the series’s final two games. Three Governors hitters ended the series with seven hits each. Junior outfielder Tyler Childress finishing with a .636 batting average (7-for-11) with six RBI, including a three-run home run in the series finale. Junior outfielder Michael Blanchard had seven hits, with three hits in the second and third games.

Sophomore first baseman John Hogan also had seven hits, including a pair of doubles. Sophomore shortstop Reed Harper and junior third baseman Greg Bachman each had five hits. Senior starter Jack Snodgrass (six scoreless innings) and junior Mike Hebert (scoreless seventh) combined to toss the Govs first shutout since March 2010 (Centenary) in an 8-0 Game 2 victory. Junior reliever Chuck Edlin picked up his season’s first victory with 2.2 scoreless innings in the series finale.

Coming Up: Eastern Kentucky

Austin Peay hosts Eastern Kentucky in its third Ohio Valley Conference weekend. The Govs have lost five straight to the Colonels, suffering a three-game series sweep in Richmond, KY last season. Austin Peay has not won a conference series against Eastern Kentucky since the 2007 season in Clarksville TN.
