Austin Peay State University GovernorsRichmond, KY – Chelsea Harris couldn’t have found a better time to round into top form.

With the Ohio Valley Conference tournament just two weeks away and Austin Peay State University women’s golf team playing in its final regular-season tournament, Harris shot a one-under 71-the Sunday’s low 18-hole score-to finish second in the EKU Lady Colonel Invitational. Harris, who was tied for 28th after a first-round 78, finished with a three-round 221, tying her with Toledo’s Erica Rivard, just  one shot behind Morehead State’s Emma Johnson.

As a team, the Lady Govs finished in seventh place with a 938 (316-313-309). Morehead State won the tourney with 901, followed by Arkansas State (903), Murray State (904), Toledo (91), Ohio (934) and Eastern Kentucky (935). Two other OVC foes, Tennessee Tech (11th/964) and Tennessee State (13th/976), finished behind the Lady Govs.

“We had some really good rounds in the tournament but we also had some rounds where we struggled,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “Arlington is a great course. Today it was really windy and we had some people who struggled with it, but we had some people who played well.”

Chelsea HarrisIn fact, Harris, the defending OVC tournament medalist, played the final 36 holes at one under par, finishing the second round with an even-par 72.

“Chelsea really played well the last two rounds,” Robson said. “In fact, she came into the final two holes today and two-under, but three putted 17. I am sure she is kicking herself over a four-putt and a couple of three putts she had in this tournament.”

Senior Ashley Wathen owned the Lady Govs second-best team score with a 236 (78-78-80), tying her for 33rd. Catie Tucker came in at 242 (79-80-83) followed by Rachel Deaton (81-83-81=245) and Holly Batey (84-85-77).

Ashley Wathen“Ashley was pretty consistent-she played well,” Robson said. “Rachel did some good things and Catie played pretty well, but the wind affected Catie some today.

“I was really happy to see Holly bounce back. She struggled finishing up the second round but put that behind her and played well with that 77.”

Individually, junior Ashley Averitt, after shooting a tourney-low 70 in the first round before shooting an 86 in the second round, came back to fire a 76 in the third round. Here 232 left her tied for 19th.

“Averitt really bounced back with round today-it was really good to see,” Robson said. “After going so low that first round and then struggling in the second, she pulled it back together.”

Holly BateyFreshman Tala Mumford finished in a tie for 27th after shooting 235 (79-74-82) while the third individual, redshirt freshman, Tabitha Beard, produced her tourney’s best round Sunday, shooting a 79 (86-81-79=246).

“Tala having two rounds under 80 was really good and her 82 today wasn’t really her fault,” Robson said. “The ball hit a cart path and it ended up in a unplayable hazard.”

With the OVC tourney just days away, Robson now must sit down to figure out her top five for GreyStone.

“We have eight girls who deserve to go and all capable of playing well,” she said. “I am going to sit down Monday and look at everything to figure out the best five who can represent Austin Peay the best in the tournament.”
