Austin Peay State University GovernorsJonesboro, AR – Austin Peay men’s golf team shot an opening-round 307 to sit in 18th at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate, hosted by Arkansas State, Monday at RidgePoint Country Club.

Heavy storms pounded the area off and on for much of the day forcing the 54-hole tournament to be shortened to 36-hole format. The event concludes with an 18-hole final round, beginning at 8:30am, Tuesday.

Central Arkansas and Meridian Community College leads the field after identical opening-round 281s. Jacksonville State is third with a 284, followed by host Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe at 287.

Austin Peay got off to a decent start, but the delays took their toll on the Govs. Sophomore Dustin Korte shot a team-best three-over par 75, making a pair of late birdies to keep his score down.

“The weather delays really took their toll on us,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “That’s part of our inexperience. We’ve got do a better job of making the best of a bad round. We couldn’t get it going, but we’ve got to be able to get off the course without doing too much damage. We compounded our mistakes and it shows.”

Freshmen Marco Iten and Anthony Bradley were behind him at four-over and five-over par, respectively. Iten made birdies on Nos. 5 and 8 to come down from six-over par. Bradley opened with birdies on his first and fourth holes, but made six bogeys the rest of the way.

Senior Luke Sherrod was the Govs fourth counting player with a seven-over 79. Sherrod played two-over on his first nine holes, but ran into trouble on the second nine, shooting five-over. Junior Logan Loftus, meanwhile, made 11 bogeys en route to a 10-over 82.

“Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be good,” Kayden said. “Hopefully, we can come out and play a strong final round. We have some improvement to make.”
