Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Junior Amy Mills’ grand-slam highlighted a five-run fifth inning for Austin Peay, as the Lady Govs defeated the Tennessee Martin Skyhawks, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at Cheryl Holt Field in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup.

Austin Peay (10-30, 5-13 OVC) junior Ashley Bolda was hit by a pitch to open up the inning, and move to second on a perfect bunt down the first-base line by senior Tiffany Smith.

After Tennessee Martin (24-15, 13-4 OVC) got the first out of the inning, the Lady Govs loaded the bases when Skyhawks third baseman Stephanie Nidiffer mishandled a bunt by senior Randal Davenport.

Skyhawks starter Chelsea Jones got red-shirt sophomore Jessica Ryan on strikes for the second out, but junior Catie Cozart worked a walk out of Jones – forcing in Bolda with the game’s first run – which brought up Mills.

Amy MillsThe Chelsea, OK, native worked the count to 2-2 then hit her third home run of the season out to center field to give the Lady Govs a 5-0 lead.

Tennessee Martin would answer back with single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings – the first on a sacrifice fly by Laurie Lindow to bring in Jenny Bain, who had opened the inning with a double down the left field line – and the second on a ground out by Leah Taylor to drive in Chelsea Cary.

But that would be as close as the Skyhawks would get, as sophomore Morgan Brewer struck out Jordan Garrett to end the game.

Brewer would earn the victory, giving up six hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts, while Jones took the loss for UT Martin, despite not giving up an earned run.

With the victory, the Lady Govs win the conference series with the Skyhawks 2-1.
