Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University designated hitter Cody Hudson’s walk-off single wrapped up a marathon 16-15 non-conference victory against Lipscomb, Tuesday night at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The game was a wild affair – it lasted 4 hours and 11 minutes, the longest game for both teams this season – with the two teams combining for 31 runs on 39 hits. Austin Peay was out-hit in the contest, 22-17, but compensated as Lipscomb walked 10 batters while the Govs walked just four.

Five different players had home runs in the contest. Govs catcher Matt Wollenzin had his first collegiate home run with a leadoff blast in the second. Bisons designated hitter Richie Goodenow had a grand slam in the seventh.

Lipscomb (14-24) scored two runs in the first and held its lead until Austin Peay (18-18) scored three runs in the second – one scoring courtesy a balk. The Bisons scored two in the third to tie the game, 4-4, but could not take the lead as the Govs scored two in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 advantage.

Cody HudsonAustin Peay would hold its lead until the seventh inning as Lipscomb scored six runs – including Goodenow’s grand slam – to take a 13-11 lead. That lead lasted only until the bottom of the inning when Govs first baseman blasted a two-run home run well over the fence in right to cap a four-run charge that gave APSU a 15-13 advantage.

After a scoreless eighth inning – one of only two scoreless innings in the contest – both teams loaded the bases in the ninth.

Lipscomb sent seven men to the plate in the top of the frame, but only managed two runs on singles by third baseman Josh Chism and right fielder Lee Wilson before Austin Peay reliever Chuck Edlin struck out Aaron Spragg looking to end the threat.

Rolando GautierAustin Peay fared better in its half of the inning, receiving back-to-back walks to start the winning effort. Right fielder Rolando Gautier’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners 90 feet, forcing Lipscomb to intentionally walk late defensive substitute Tyler Childress. The ploy almost worked out as Hudson’s soft liner just got over the Lipscomb first baseman and into right field for the winning score.

Left fielder Jon Clinard and Hogan each had three hits to lead the Govs offensive effort. Bachman finished the night 3-for-5 with a team-best three RBI.

Edlin (2-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Jon ClinardLipscomb reliever Chad Fromm – the last of five pitchers – was tagged for the loss after allowing one run over the final two innings.

Chism led Lipscomb with a 4-for-5, four RBI outing while first baseman Tennyson Dodd added a 4-for-6 effort.

Austin Peay returns to action with a three-game non-conference tilt at SIU Edwardsville. The series, which takes place during the Govs off week from Ohio Valley Conference play, will begin with a 6:00pm, Friday contest.
