Clarksville, TN – Heritage Bank has awarded 52 students at 30 area schools $500.00 scholarships. The scholarships were made possible by the 8 year old Heritage Bank Scholarship Fund. Since founding the fund, the bank has awarded college scholarships totaling $170,000 to 340 students selected from the various communities that Heritage Bank serves. This scholarship fund is one of the largest efforts made to enhance the educational endeavors for students of Western Kentucky and Tennessee.
“On behalf of the Heritage Bank family I would like to congratulate these students, they are the among the academic elites of our community,” said Heritage Bank President/CEO John Peck. He continued, “Not only is graduating from high school a great success, but these students receiving a scholarship to aid in their future education is an excellent achievement. All of their neighbors at Heritage Bank are extremely proud of their efforts towards their educational goals thus far. Our hope is that they will continue to do great things in the higher education institution of their choice.”
The scholarship recipients were honored at a Banquet held at the James E Bruce Convention Center in Hopkinsville, KY.
16 Students from Clarksville-Montgomery County were selected to receive scholarships:
Lauren Williams, and Laura Miller from Clarksville High School; Kaleigh Goostree from Clarksville Academy; Jontez Thorpe, and Antonia Heflin from Kenwood High School; Caitlin Jackson, and Teresa Johnson from Montgomery Central High School; Kalen Lane, and Sondrea Tartt from Northeast High School; Autumn Kirkland, and Ethan Bisgaard from Northwest High School; Conner Daniel, Katherine Myers, and Laura Mimms from Rossview High School, Taylor Reynolds from the Middle College at APSU; and Brittany Blair from West Creek High School.
Students from schools in the markets served by Heritage Bank were selected, these include Christian County, Ky; Calloway County, Ky; Trigg County Ky; Todd County, Ky; Marshall County, Ky; Fulton County, Ky; Cheatham County, TN; Houston County, TN; Montgomery County, TN; and Fort Campbell, Ky.
Alumni Scholarships
Two alumni Scholarships were also awarded from the Heritage Bank Alumni Scholarship Fund which was founded in 2008. Past recipients of the Heritage Bank scholarship who are enrolled in their Freshmen, Sophomore, or Junior year of college are eligible to apply for the the Alumni Scholarship. This year, 54 students submitted applications for the Alumni scholarship and 2 were chosen. According to Marlene Dade the Marketing and Business Development Director for Heritage Bank, “The Selection Committee had a very difficult time choosing between all of the well qualified applicants.”
The 2011 Heritage Bank Alumni Scholarship recipients are Rachel Brown and Angelica Harris.
Rachel Brown, from Christian County KY, is a Sophomore at Murray State University pursuing a major in Music Education. In her first two years at college, she has become involved in numerous student organizations and has volunteered many community service hours to her church and community all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Her goal after graduation is to pursue her Masters in Music Education at Belmont University and then to start and direct string orchestras at public schools in disadvantaged areas.
Angelica Harris, from Clarksville, TN, is a Sophomore at Austin Peay State University majoring in Biology. Angelica has been involved in many student organizations and has volunteered many community service hours. After graduating from Austin Peay, she plans to attend graduate school to earn her PhD in Environmental Conservation and then pursue a career which promotes environmental cleanliness.
2011 Honorees
During the program educators from each of the markets were honored for their contributions towards educating the youth of our community. These included Lynda Coleman from Calloway County, Alvin & Jeanne Rose from Cheatham County, Don Ahart from Christian County, Joan Williams from Fulton County, Janet Miller from Houston County, Dot Lavender from Marshall County, Irene Buck from Montgomery County, Grace Evelyn Miller from Todd County, and Tim McGinnis from Trigg County.
Christian County/Hopkinsville Market: Mr. Don Ahart
Don worked in the Christian County School System for 31 years. He was a teacher, bus driver, principal, and Director of Personnel for the Christian County School System. When asked about his greatest memory is all his years working in the school system Mr. Ahart commented, “the time spent as the principal of Crofton because I loved seeing the kids as they learned new things.” Since retiring, Don is on his second term as a City Councilman in Hopkinsville.
Calloway County/Murray Market: Lynda Coleman
Ms. Coleman worked for many years in the Calloway County School System and Murray State University. She was the Editor of Recollections Books at Calloway County High School where she told stores from Murray and Calloway County.
Trigg County/ Cadiz Market: Mr. Tim McGinnis
Mr. McGinnis worked in the Trigg County Schools for 10 years and retired as the Superintendent of the Trigg County School System. When asked about his greatest memory, Tim replied, “My greatest memories always focus on our students and their academic successes.” Since retirement, Mr. McGinnis has been spending the majority of his time with family and friends, working around the house, and has plans to catch a few fish this spring.
Todd County/Elkton Market: Ms. Grace Evelyn Miller
Ms. Miller retired as the Home Economics teacher in the Todd County School System. She served over 34 years as an educator. Ms. Miller has been a strong influence in the Todd County community and since retirement has enjoyed spending time with friends.
Marshall County (Benton/Calvert City) Market: Mrs. Dot Lavender
Mrs. Dot Lavender served 31 years in the Marshall County School System. During her tenure, Mrs. Lavender served as an elementary school teacher at Calvert Elementary. When asked about her greatest achievement during her career, Dot replied, “the fifth grade academic team.”
Fulton County Market: Mrs. Joan A. Williams
Mrs. Williams served over 27 years in the Fulton City High School. During her tenure, she served as a Home Economics / Family & Consumer Sciences teacher. She retired from teaching in 1999 and is enjoying her husband, son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren.
Cheatham County Market: Mr. Alvin Rose & Jeanne Rose
Mr. Rose served over 42 years in the Cheatham County schools. During his tenure, Mr. Rose served as teacher, assistant principal, principal and secondary education supervisor.
Mrs. Jeanne Rose served over 20 years in the Cheatham County schools. She was the very first Guidance Counselor at Cheatham Middle School.
Mr. & Mrs. Rose both retired this year.
Houston County Market: Ms. Janet Miller
Ms. Janet Miller taught for many, many years in the Houston County School System. During those years she taught first grade at Tennessee Ridge Elementary.
Montgomery County/Clarksville Market: Ms. Irene Buck
Ms. Irene Buck served the Montgomery County School System for 33 years as an elementary school teacher. When asked what her greatest memory was, Irene stated “it would be hard to choose just one memory in her 40 year career. All of the small moments add up to be big moments.” Ms. Buck retired in 2004 and is a member and volunteer at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarksville, TN.
