Crime in Tennessee 2010 Report shows dip in Crime for Third Year in a Row

Tennessee Bureau of InvestigationNashville, TN – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation today released the 2010 Crime in Tennessee report which showed a 2.6% decrease in overall crimes reported in Tennessee from 2009. This is the third year in a row that reported offenses decreased when compared with the previous year. This is the tenth year the Crime Statistics Unit within TBI has published the annual Crime in Tennessee report. 

For the 2010 calendar year, 582,134 Group A offenses were reported compared with 603,308 in 2009 with the largest majority of crimes being committed against property. Crimes in all three categories, against persons, property and society all decreased. With an estimated population of more than 6.3 million people, Tennessee has seen crime drop a total of just over 7% since 2008. 

“Crime in Tennessee 2010” Fact List 

  • The reported number of murders decreased by almost 24% from 472 in 2009 to 360 in 2010 with 35% of murders being committed between 9:00pm and 3:00am.
  • Simple assaults make up the largest number of crimes reported with more than 96,000 for 2010, but that is still a reduction from the previous year.
  • 23,591 people were arrested for DUI a decrease from 28,081 in 2009.
  • Domestic violence offenses made up more than 51% of all Crimes Against Persons.
  • Nearly 35% of Group A offenses were cleared by arrest or exceptional means.
  • Of the 388,021 arrests made about 73% of the arrestees were male compared with 27% female.
  • Juveniles comprised 9.5% of total arrests — a decrease from last year.
  • Approximately 29% of robberies committed occurred at a residence.
  • Nearly 13% of stolen property was recovered.
