Additional rainfall not expected to cause river flooding

Montgomery CountyMontgomery County, TN – The National Weather Service in Nashville is predicting an average of two inches of rain, and as much as three inches locally, to fall on the Clarksville-Montgomery County area through Tuesday morning.

The additional precipitation is not expected to cause more flooding along the Cumberland River in Clarksville, although the county remains under a flash flood watch.

River level this morning was 41 feet for the Cumberland, with 45.5 feet expected by Wednesday. A level of 46 feet is considered flood stage and levels of 53 to 55 feet are where the water level reaches Riverside Drive but not flood the roadway.

During a weather briefing Monday morning, NWS predicted drier weather for the remainder of the week but water levels of the Cumberland are expected to remain high throughout the period.

The Red River level at Port Royal was 17.8 feet this morning, and by Wednesday, the level is expected to reach 29.6 feet. Flood stage for the river is 30 feet.

Barkley Dam was opened during the weekend to help bring water levels down.

Peak Cumberland water levels in Stewart County are expected to be comparable to last year’s flooding, NWS officials said.
