Hogan, Harper earn adidas OVC weekly baseball honors

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBrentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University first baseman John Hogan and closer Ryne Harper were named adidas Co-Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Ohio Valley Conference, the league office announced Monday.

John HoganHogan, a sophomore from St. Louis, MO, had four multi-hit outings last weekend, including a pair of game-winning hits as the Govs’ posted a 4-0 mark. He opened the week with a game-winning, ninth-inning two-run single – and finished 2-for-5 with two RBI – in the Govs 7-5 victory at Belmont, Tuesday.

In the Govs weekend series at Morehead State, Hogan had seven hits and eight RBI. He was 2-for-5 with two RBI in the Govs 7-3 series-opening victory – his two-run home run in the fourth inning providing the game-winning tallies. In the day’s second game, Hogan was 2-for-5 at the plate but his lone RBI – on a sixth-inning double – closed the Govs to within one run as they came back from a nine-run deficit to win 12-10 in nine innings.

Hogan wrapped up his weekend with a 3-for-6, five-RBI outing in a 24-5 rout of Morehead State, Sunday. He opened the day with a three-run home run in the first and added a two-run double in the sixth.

Ryne Harper

Ryne HarperHarper, a senior from Clarksville, had two wins and a save in his three relief appearances during the week. He picked up the victory at Belmont, Tuesday, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings – striking out two – after Hogan’s two-run single in the ninth gave the Govs the lead for good.

Harper opened his stay in Morehead State by recording his season’s fifth save in the series opener. He entered the game with two runners on base and two outs. Harper did not allow an inherited runner to score as he struck out the second batter he faced, ending the game. He returned to the mound in game two and went 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four, to pick up the victory.

Hogan shared the adidas OVC Player of the Week award with Eastern Kentucky’s Bryan Soloman who batted .529 with two home runs and six RBI. Harper shared the adidas Pitcher of the Week honor with Jacksonville State’s Hunter Rivers, who threw a complete-game (seven-inning) two-hit shutout against SIU Edwardsville.

Hogan and Harper become the third and fourth Governors players to receive adidas OVC weekly honors. Freshman second baseman Jordan Hankins and junior pitcher Zach Toney swept the league’s first 2011 weekly honors.

Austin Peay has the upcoming week off for finals before returning to action with a key OVC series against fourth-place Tennessee Tech, Saturday-Sunday. The series will begin with a 1:00pm, Saturday doubleheader at Raymond C. Hand Park.
