Walking Event to Kick Off Mayor’s Fitness Council

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan will lead a group of residents on her first “Walks with the Mayor” at 1:30pm Tuesday, May 17th from the Ajax Turner Senior Center, 953 Clark Street. The monthly walks will be part of the Mayor’s Fitness Council that will be established to promote healthier lifestyles and choices among people in the community.

During a news conference prior to the walk, the Mayor will outline how the Fitness Council is to be established, and its mission of helping the citizens of Clarksville engage in more active and healthy lifestyles. The Mayor’s Fitness Council stems from the work of a 2010-2011 Leadership Clarksville group, “ClarksWell,” which conducted a comprehensive review of the overweight/obesity problem in our community and developed a proactive, multi-faceted plan to address it.

Some members of ClarksWell will serve as a steering committee to help establish the Fitness Council, using the data and recommendations for action they compiled during the past year while participating in Leadership Clarksville. Walks with the Mayor are intended to be community events at various venues to bring awareness to the topic of obesity while affording residents an opportunity to take a first step toward better overall health.

May is National Sports and Physical Fitness Month, which makes Tuesday an appropriate time to announce the Mayor’s Fitness Council.

Tuesday’s walk will proceed from the Senior Center to Veterans Plaza, via a sidewalk constructed last month along Clark Street to eliminate center patrons from having to walk or roll their wheelchairs in the street when they go to the Public Library, Health Department or other offices at the plaza.
