First Catie Summers Scholarship Awarded

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemClarksville, TN – Clarksville High students Alexis M. Bynum and Austin Pitts are the first two recipients of the Catie Summers Memorial Scholarship.  Each will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their freshman year in college. Applicants have to be graduating seniors from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Schools who have battled cancer during their lifetime.

Recipients must have a 3.0 grade point average OR a mininum ACT score of 21 and be accept to a college or university.

The Community Foundation of Middle TN oversees the scholarship and provides the applications, verifications, and makes the selection of the winning students.  Two scholarships are available each year for eligible students.

Alexis plans to attend New York University to study design and Austin will be attending Austin Peay State University to begin his studies in civil engineering. Bill Summers, Catie’s father, presented the checks to the students along with Spanish teacher Danny Magrans. Magrans is the sponsor for the HOPE Club at CHS which raised money for the scholarship through annual Viva Catie cross country bike rides. Catie was a CHS student when she died of cancer three years ago.
