Sounds Close Homestand With 5-1 Win Over I-Cubs

Nashville Turns Triple Play In Exciting Finale Victory

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds ended their homestand on a high note on Friday evening, posting a 5-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs in front of 8,181 fans at Greer Stadium.

With the win, Nashville (23-31) gained a split of the four-game series against their division rivals and finished its homestand with a 5-3 mark.

Three Sounds hurlers (Mark DiFelice, Chase Wright, Sean Green) combined to hold Iowa to three hits on the evening, while the 6-7-8 hitters carried the load for Nashville offense. Mike Rivera, Caleb Gindl, and Taylor Green combined for a 6-for-11 evening with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Sounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Rivera’s two-run, bases-loaded single off Iowa starter Alberto Cabrera. Eric Farris (double) and Edwin Maysonet (hit by pitch) scored on the knock.

I-Cubs first baseman Scott Moore halved the Sounds’ lead to 2-1 in the second with a mammoth solo homer to center that cleared the 24-foot high batter’s eye. The blast, which came against DiFelice, was his fifth of the year.

Nashville got that run back in the bottom of the frame. Gindl drew an inning-opening walk and moved to third on a Green single before scoring when DiFelice laid down a sacrifice bunt up the first-base line.

DiFelice allowed only one hit (Moore’s homer) in his four innings of work in his first start of the year before being removed due to a pitch count limit. He struck out four batters and threw 53 pitches (32 for strikes).

Wright (3-4) followed DiFelice and picked up the victory by hurling four innings of scoreless, two-hit ball. The left-hander’s ERA as a reliever dropped to 1.20 (2er/15.0ip).

Gindl upped the Nashville lead to 4-1 in the fourth when he led off with his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to center off Cabrera.

The Sounds extended their advantage to 5-1 in the sixth. Mat Gamel and Rivera opened the inning with consecutive singles before Gindl struck again, driving an opposite-field RBI double into the left field corner to plate Gamel and chase Cabrera from the contest. Iowa reliever Blake Parker came on and retired the next three batters in order, two by strikeout, to escape the jam with no further damage.

Nashville fielders turned a triple play in the top of the seventh inning, the first for the Sounds in three seasons and the first in Pacific Coast League play during the 2011 campaign.

Bryan LaHair led off with a double against Wright and Ty Wright walked to put a pair of runners on for Moore. On the first pitch from Wright, the Cubs’ hitter smacked a sharp liner to Maysonet at shortstop, who stepped on second to retire LaHair then fired to first to Gamel to complete the triple-killing.

Cabrera (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up five runs on eight hits over five-plus innings of action for Iowa.

The Sounds head out of town for an eight-game, nine-day road trip beginning on Saturday with a 6:00pm series opener in New Orleans. Left-hander Sam Narron (3-2, 3.46) will man the bump for Nashville to face Zephyrs right-hander Mariano Gomez, who will make his first appearance of the season.
