Colors Casing Ceremony to Mark End of 71-year Armor Era at Fort Knox

Fort Knox KYFort Knox, KY – After 71 years at Fort Knox, the U.S. Army Armor School will case its flags at 9:00am on June 10th at Brooks Parade Field here, marking the transition of the last remaining Armor School elements here to their new home at Fort Benning, GA.

Fort Knox’s longtime identity as the Home of Armor and Cavalry changed with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure announcement, or BRAC, which directed that by September 2011 Fort Knox would no longer retain the armor and cavalry training mission.

However, this same BRAC announcement ultimately increased Fort Knox’s population by almost 5,000 due to the organizations the Army post was directed to receive, such as Army Human Resources Command, Army Cadet Command, and the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division, among other organizations.

Several of the armor and cavalry training courses taught at Fort Knox have already moved to Fort Benning over the last 12 months and are fully operational. The last class of Armor School trainees at Fort Knox is scheduled to graduate on July 22nd.

The June 10 ceremony will feature the Armor School’s primary armor training units – the 194th Armored Brigade and the 316th Cavalry Brigade – rolling up their respective flags, or colors, and casing each in a green sheath, signifying the end of their missions at Fort Knox. These two units will uncase their colors at a ceremony at Fort Benning on June 20th.

The colors casing ceremony is open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside Waybur Theater here.
