Walkoff Blast Drops Sounds In Extras In Albuquerque, 7-6

Nashville SoundsAlbuquerque, NM – Trayvon Robinson hit a walkoff 10th inning home run to lift the Albuquerque Isotopes to 7-6 win over the Nashville Sounds on Friday evening at Isotopes Park.

Robinson’s 13th home run was his only hit of the game, as the outfielder blasted Sean Green’s (0-1) second pitch of the inning over the wall in centerfield to end the game.

Moving to 0-4 in extra-inning play this season, Nashville (27-33) never led game, but tied the contest three separate times.

The one-run loss for Nashville was the club’s PCL-leading 17th of the season, which has accounted for just over half of the team’s total defeats.

Merkin Valdez (3-1) earned the win with five strikeouts over two scoreless innings.

While also recording his PCL-leading 11th outfield assist, centerfielder Brett Carroll went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Erick Almonte and Zelous Wheeler also added two hits.

Albuquerque plated the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning as Wheeler committed his first throwing error of the game to allow John Lindsay to reach base. Lindsay moved to second on a Russ Mitchell single, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on a Jamie Hoffman sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Albuquerque lead.

Sounds starter Sam Narron helped his own cause in the next frame. Wheeler banged a one-out triple to right field and scored to tie the contest at 1-1 as Narron hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The RBI was Narron’s first of the season.

The Isotopes homered twice in the next frame to take a 5-1 lead. Justin Sellers led off with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot over the wall in left field. After two consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly, Lindsay belted a two-run homer to left field for his fifth on the year.

The Sounds got two runs back to cut the Albuquerque lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Carroll was issued a five-pitch walk to lead off the inning and later scored on an Almonte line drive double to center. Edwin Maysonet then singled home Almonte for the club’s second run of the inning.

Albuquerque added another run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-3 after Narron allowed three straight singles, highlighted by an RBI base hit Eugenio Velez.

The Sounds struck back and knotted the contest at 6-6 in the top of the seventh off reliever Travis Schlichting. Wheeler hit a line drive single to lead off and later came home on a Carroll RBI single. First Baseman Mat Gamel then came to the dish and belted a two-out, game-tying homer to right field to send the game to extra-innings. The two-run homer was the slugger’s 10th of the season.

Ranking third in the PCL with a 3.13 ERA coming into the contest, Narron scattered 12 hits while allowed a season-high six runs (five earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Zack Segovia pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings while stranding both of his inherited runners. Donovan Hand contributed two shutout frames.

Former Sound Dana Eveland tossed a quality start for a no-decision for Albuquerque. The left-hander allowed three runs on six hits in six innings.

The first Sound to record a double-digit hitting streak of the season, Gindl went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Joe Koshansky’s season-ending 18-gamer in 2010 was the last time a Sound recorded a double-digit streak.

Taylor Green added a double to extend his extra-base hitting streak to five games.  Eric Farris went 0-for-5 to snap his streak of reaching base safely at 24 games, which was the longest stretch by a Sound in 2011 and the 3rd-longest active streak in the PCL.

The Sounds and Isotopes will play the third game of a four-game set at 5:35pm CT on Saturday evening at Isotopes Park. Nashville right-hander Amaury Rivas (4-5, 4.36) takes the mound against Albuquerque southpaw Randy Keisler (1-2, 5.96).
