Kurka joins Lady Govs tennis program for 2012

APSU Sports: Women’s Tennis

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – After a challenging 2011 season, Austin Peay State University women’s tennis coach Malik Tabet began his rebuilding process by signing Weronika Kurka, of Poland, to a National Letter of Intent. Kurka is the Lady Govs first signee for 2012.

Kurka is a talented player who has been ranked as high as 315 in the Tennis Europe Junior Circuit. A strong singles player with a good footwork, Kurka also owns a strong doubles game. Kurka is billed as an aggressive player with good decision-making skills.

“I liked her game style,” Tabet said. “What impressed me the most was that she moved very well. Usually when you get players with her type of game, you can build them up to be much stronger on the court. She’s got a lot of potential and we’re happy to have her.”

Kurka’s experience on the junior circuit also translated to events with the International Tennis Federation. In fact, her highest ITF ranking, 1454, came during January 2010 due in part to five doubles wins. She also posted an opening-round singles win at a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event, Szczecin, in Poland.

The Lady Govs finished at 9-11 overall, last season, but managed a 5-3 Ohio Valley Conference record. Kurka will provide depth to a Lady Govs squad that played 16 of its 19 matches without a No. 6 singles player or No. 3 doubles team.
