The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – Animals have come to the Customs House Museum – but have no fear. These critters won’t bite. They are part of Call of the Wild, a hunting exhibit that just recently opened. Along with deer, ducks, and a wolf, (among others), patrons will enjoy getting up close to some of the more “exotic” species found within the Crouch Gallery.

Call of the Wild focuses mainly on hunting in Tennessee. Included in the exhibit are regional hunting clubs, hunting accessories, and a wonderful collage of prized photos of hunting experiences. Regional hunters “Dirt” King, Bill Orgain, Bryce Sanders, and Ernie Veglio have contributed parts of their collections to the installation. Dirt is best recognized for the popular hunting show “Hunting University” that he produces in partnership with nationally-known outdoors man Charlie Ingram. For those who like art, Call of the Wild includes paintings by nationally known wildlife artist Frank Baggett. Exhibit Curator Terri Jordan says,”We have been fortunate to partner with several area businesses and individuals in our projects. With Call of the Wild, we look forward to continuing this process.”

On view through October 9th, the museum will host a variety of events Related to this subject, including September’s Art & Lunch program featuring Master Gardner Tracy Jackson. Tracy’s lecture will be “Landscaping for Wildlife”. Monthly Art & Lunch programs are free to the public and guests are encouraged to bring a “brown bag”. Curator of Education, Sue Lewis, says the museum will also have special programs geared towards the younger patrons of the museum.

In keeping with the outdoor theme, the Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery will showcase the paintings of Mitchell Chamberlain from September through October. Chamberlain’s cropped-in-views of nature have a feeling of abstract while celebrating the beautiful colors of the outdoors.
