Sounds Notch Fifth Straight Win In Series Opener

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds continued their recent hot play on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, defeating the division-rival Iowa Cubs by a 5-2 margin in the opener of a four-game series.

The win was the fifth in a row for Nashville (48-52), all against the I-Cubs.

Center fielder Logan Schafer enjoyed a solid Triple-A debut for the Sounds, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, run scored, and stolen base. In addition, he made an outstanding running catch of a Ryan Flaherty fly ball at the wall in right-center in the fifth.

Iowa catcher Welington Castillo – who recorded three of the Cubs’ four hits on the night and missed the cycle by a triple – gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when he belted a one-out solo homer to center off Sounds starter Amaury Rivas, the backstop’s 14th longball of the season.

The Sounds took a 4-1 lead in the third when they batted around against Cubs starter and former Milwaukee Brewer Dave Bush.

Nashville tied the game when Schafer recorded his first career Triple-A hit, an RBI single to left that plated Caleb Gindl from second to make it a 1-1 contest. Later in the frame, the Sounds took a 3-1 lead when Erick Almonte (2-for-3) ripped a two-out, two-run single up the middle to bring in Schafer and Edwin Maysonet. Mat Gamel blooped an opposite-field ducksnort to left that dropped right onto the foul line for an RBI single that knocked in Taylor Green and increased the Sounds’ advantage to 4-1.

Jordan Brown added a run for Nashville in the fourth when he lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center to drive in Gindl, marking the eighth game in his last nine that Brown has recorded an RBI.

The I-Cubs got a run back in the fifth when pinch-hitter Jonathon Mota drove in Castillo with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly of his own.

Rivas (7-9) picked up his team-leading seventh victory for the Sounds after allowing two runs on two runs on two hits while walking three batters and striking out seven in five frames.

Left-hander Daniel Meadows followed Rivas with an outstanding relief effort, working 3 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing only two hits while striking out five. The southpaw threw 25 of his 33 pitches for strikes.

Jim Henderson closed out the contest by retiring the final two batters.

Bush (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Iowa after giving up five runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings of action.

The teams continue the series with a 6:35pm matchup on Saturday night. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-6, 4.42) will make the start for the Sounds and face Iowa right-hander Alberto Cabrera (1-2, 6.53).
