Clarksville, TN – The Marina – New “Request For Proposals (RFP)” have gone out to potentially interested marina operators. I know the city had received interest from marina operators before the RFPs had gone out.
The city has acquired a Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) funding for the construction of transient docks. The grant funding is in the amount of $585,000.
The selection of a marina builder/operator will occur in the latter half of September 2011, with an opening date for the marina scheduled on Memorial Day, May 2012. The potential marina operator will have the opportunity to negotiate the purchase and development of the 7.7 acres, which was the old Jaycee area, into a mixed-use (business/residential) development.
Legal Suits
Case of Burkhart vs City of Clarksville: The city has been notified that the Tennessee Supreme Court has denied Councilman’s Burkhart’s appeal request of his lawsuit against the City of Clarksville.
Case of Sherlock vs City of Clarksville: This was the firefighter case where Mayor Piper had terminated Mr. Sherlock and in a court review it was sent back for another review due to a process technicality. Mayor Piper re-reviewed, before leaving office, per court direction and upheld his original decision. This re-review was questioned by the legal reps for Mr. Sherlock as to which mayor the judge wanted to do the re-evaluation (Mayor Piper was about to leave office). The judge sent it back to Mayor McMillan who has overturned the firing.
Most Patriotic City
Clarksville was notified that it was not selected as the Most Patriotic City. Rapid City SD was the winner. While we might not have convinced Rand-McNally that we are #1, I know the troops that are stationed here know we care.
Big Dig On College Street
You may have read that College Street, near the Ford dealer, sank. The city and state will share in the repair. However, the city’s part will mainly be out of Gas & Water. Their costs may be around $2 million. Gas & Water knew it eventually would have to rework the storm water and sewer system in this area and had been financially planning for it. While they planned for it to be later, they have the financial resources to do the job without borrowing money.
The state is replacing some drain pipes too and will have those here the first of next week when digging will begin. The problem is over 30 feet below road surface and will likely require digging sidewalk-to-sidewalk. The project will require several weeks to complete.
